NY Govenor Awards $400,000 Grant of Taxpayer Money to Foie Gras Porducer

Thursday, May 25, 2006

Urgent action alert...

Please call, fax, email and write Governor Pataki's office and the Economic Development Agency to demand that this grant be withdrawn on the grounds that Hudson Valley Foie Gras will use the money to continue to violate NY's anti-cruelty statute, Agriculture and Markets Code Section 353. It is no secret anymore that "foie gras" is always made by force feeding ducks or geese, and any money given to this company will be used for just that.

Here's a letter from the ASPCA, which has police power in NYS to enforce the animal cruelty laws. Unfortunately, the Sullivan County District Attorney is in the pocket of the "foie gras" producers and will not prosecute.

Contact info for the Economic Development Agency.

The direct line for the grant department is 212-803-2464. Demand to speak to or leave a message for Chairman Charles A. Gargano.

Contact info for Governor Pataki.

If you call the Governor's office, the phone answerer will attempt to just give you the address to write a letter. However, insist that you would like your complaint to be recorded, and that you are opposed to the grant just given to Hudson Valley Foie Gras to continue violating NY's animal cruelty laws. You will then be asked to give your zip code so the call can be logged. Governor Pataki is considering a presidential run, so calls, emails, faxes and letters from all over the country could be effective at getting his attention.
