Vegan Sunday Brunch in San Diego

Many of us now living in San Diego are transplants and remember living in places where eating a vegan breakfast out was impossible. In San Diego, weekends (especially Sundays) offer several excellent vegan options, including a brand new one that will be available after mid-December with opening of Kung Food in Hillcrest, a 100% plant-based restaurant. If you're up and about on weekend mornings, San Diego offers great options. We hope with this article let you know about what is available.

A local favorite, and perhaps the best deal, is the Sunday all you-can-eat brunch at
Jyoti-Bihanga. While the whole restaurant is not vegan, the Sunday buffet offers plenty of vegan options to make the $8.95 a great deal (especially for those of us who love to overeat :). The Jyoti Brunch has vegan blueberry pancakes, tofu scramble, home fries, yummy apple cake and sometimes biscuits and gravy.

The restaurant is located on Adams Ave. in Normal Heights. The brunch is not available every Sunday, often three times a month. If you call ahead during the week they can tell you if it there will be a Sunday brunch the upcoming weekends.

One breakfast you can count on is the deli at People’s Organic Co-op in Ocean Beach. If you plan your shopping trips for Saturday or Sunday mornings you can start your trip with a yummy breakfast. We all know shopping when your hungry is dangerous!

On both Saturday and Sunday the deli at People’s offers tempeh sausage, breakfast potatoes, tofu scramble and biscuits and gravy. The biscuits and gravy are awesome. The tempeh sausage can sometimes be cold (CFA suggest you ask for the tempeh off the bottom!). The deli, of course, offers the all day long non-breakfast items which on Sundays includes the delicious Mexican pasta bake and on Saturdays vegan mac and cheese.

Prices are done by the pound. Food is prepared in a veg kitchen (almost entirely vegan) and if considered as part of a shopping trip can make for a nice morning.

CFA is also excited to be the first to tell you about what we think could be the greatest new improvement to our veg breakfast options. Opening in mid to late December, former owners of Eatopia (now closed) are starting a new eatery off of Balboa Park in Banker’s Hill. Kung Food will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner with a 100% plant-based menu.

As far as this article is concerned we are most excited about Kung Food's weekend “pancake brunches”! According to Mitch, one of the co-owners, “our brunch includes a variety of pancakes, (all gluten-free, whole grain, organic, 100% plant-based), a variety of “omelets” (again, gluten-free and 100% plant-based) and scrambled 'eggs' some with 'bacon'/'cheese', some plain (again, 100% plant based) fresh squeezed juices, smoothies, coconut water, organic coffees/lattes/espresso, and home-made gluten-free organic muffins”.

Stephannie’s Bakery in Ocean Beach also offers great less traditional breakfast options. Famous for their delicious strudels, this OB bakery makes entirely vegan baked goods that will knock your socks off. A strudel and a cup of tea/coffee is an excellent breakfast.

We hope that you find some great new breakfast options. Please let them know CFA sent you!
